Types of Washer

The washers produced by our company mainly include the following types:

01

Lock Washer

A lock washer is a specialized type of washer designed to prevent fasteners like bolts and screws from loosening due to vibrations or other forces. They achieve this by creating tension or friction between the fastener and the surface it's installed on, keeping the connection tight.

02

Spring Washer

A spring washer is a fastener component with a curved or wavy shape that provides a spring-like action when compressed. They are designed to create tension and preload in a joint assembly, preventing loosening due to vibration or dynamic loads.

03

Retaining Ring

A retaining ring is a type of fastener that secures parts together, often by creating a shoulder to prevent components from moving out of position within a housing or on a shaft. These rings are typically made of metal and come in various forms, such as E-clips, snap rings, or circlips, with internal or external designs.

Applications of Washer

Load Distribution

Fasteners exert high levels of force when installed. Washers help to distribute that load to prevent damage to the material. Without washers, materials are more likely to crack due to tightening pressure.

Spacing

If the length of the bolt or screw is greater than the object’s thickness, it is impossible to sufficiently tighten the fastener without the screw protruding from the other side. By adding washers, you can create enough space to prevent the fastener from going too far into the substrate.

Absorbing Vibrations

Washers made from plastic or rubber absorb vibrations in high vibration applications. Vibration reduction keeps the fasteners from loosening over time and helps to protect the attached equipment from vibration damage.

Sealing Connections

Washers can be used to seal joints on piping, tubing, and ductwork, to create a waterproof seal that prevents gas or fluid leakage.

Shapes Of Washers

Spherical Shape

As their intended purpose, these washers have a precise, parallel plane between the bolt head and the nut face. Spherical washers automatically correct and balance the angular misalignment between the planes while guarding against bolt bending. Examples include fender, slotted, countersunk, and flat washers.

Square Shape

Compared to round washers, square washers have a higher surface area, which improves torque distribution. They help in corrosion resistance and rotation prevention. Additionally, they are employed to restrict electrical current, vibration, and sound for usage in seismic applications.

Shoulder Shape

These washers are also known as insulator washers. They are non-metallic, often made of nylon. Shoulder washes typically come with a long or short barrel. They protect fasteners from moisture and dirt.

Wave Shape

Usually made from metals, wave washers are often curved in two directions. They function primarily as spacers or cushions; when compressed, they help sustain loads and maintain fastener tension. An example is the wave washer.

C-Shaped

Designed to slide in and out of position on a bolt without necessarily loosening it, C-washers find use as a retention device on a grooved shaft. They help keep components in place. Examples include the lock and slotted washer.

Proper Installation of Washers
01.

Match Washer Size to Screw Size

Always ensure that the washer size matches the screw size. This ensures a proper fit and prevents any potential issues down the line.

02.

Placement Matters

Place the washer directly under the screw head or nut. This positioning maximizes its effectiveness by evenly distributing pressure to help prevent damage to the underlying material.

03.

Tighten Gradually and Evenly

When tightening screws, it's crucial to do so gradually and evenly. Avoid rushing or applying excessive force as this may damage the washer or distort its shape.

04.

Use Appropriate Tools

To achieve optimal tightening without overloading or stripping threads, use a torque wrench or suitable tool for your specific application. This ensures consistent results and avoids unnecessary complications.

FAQ

Q: Are Washers Important?

A: Yes, washers are crucial in many applications. They distribute the load of a fastener, preventing damage to the surface and ensuring even pressure distribution. This helps prevent loosening due to vibration, protects surfaces from damage, and enhances the longevity and reliability of the fastening.

Q: Are Washers Directional?

A: Most washers are not directional and can be placed in any orientation. However, certain types, such as spring washers or conical (Belleville) washers, are directional and must be installed in the correct orientation to function properly.

Q: Are Washers Magnetic?

A: Washers can be magnetic or non-magnetic depending on the material they are made from. Steel washers, for example, are typically magnetic, while washers made from non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass, or plastic are non-magnetic.

Q: How Are Washers Measured?

A: Washers are measured by their inner diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and thickness. The inner diameter should match the diameter of the bolt or screw they are used with, while the outer diameter and thickness can vary based on the application requirements.

Q: Can Washers Be Reused?

A: Washers can generally be reused if they are in good condition and not deformed or damaged. However, lock washers and some specialty washers may lose their effectiveness after being used once.

Q: How Do You Choose the Right Washer for Your Application?

A: Choosing the right washer depends on several factors including the type of load, the material being fastened, and the environment. Consider the material, size, and type of washer that best suits your specific needs.
