Dowel Pins (Alignment Pins / Fixing Pins)

Dowel pins, also known as alignment pins or fixing pins, are components that use workpiece holes as a positioning reference to restrict an object's degrees of freedom. They control linear movement along the X, Y, and Z axes, as well as rotational movement around these axes, thereby limiting all six degrees of freedom. In molds, dowel pins are primarily used between fastened screws to ensure positional accuracy. They are mainly employed for assembly alignment but can also serve as connections, overload shear connections in safety devices, or anti-loosening mechanisms. The basic types include cylindrical pins and taper pins.

Cylindrical Pins vs. Taper Pins

Manufacturing Process Differences

Cylindrical pins can be pre-machined, while taper pins are typically custom-fitted.

Applications

Cylindrical pins are suitable for high-precision positioning (pre-machined holes) and can resist shear forces.

Taper pins are often used in applications requiring frequent disassembly.

Functional Differences

Cylindrical pins are press-fitted into reamed holes with slight interference, capable of bearing moderate loads. To maintain positioning accuracy and joint stability, frequent disassembly is not recommended. They are primarily used for alignment but can also function as connecting pins or safety pins.

Taper pins feature a 1:50 taper, providing self-locking properties, high positioning accuracy, and easy installation. Repeated assembly/disassembly has minimal impact on precision. They are mainly used for alignment but can also serve as connecting pins, requiring reamed holes.
