The hex speed nuts are a unique type of locking nut designed to prevent standard nuts from loosening. They're not typically used as the main fastening component, but rather as a secondary lock to secure regular nuts in place and prevent them from backing out.
The primary function of the hex speed nuts is to act as a locking mechanism. After the regular nut is tightened, the speed nut is screwed on and tightened by hand, pressing against the standard nut to keep it in place. Then, a wrench is used to further tighten the speed nut, typically between 60°–90°. When removing the lock, simply loosen the regular hex nut to create a gap between it and the speed nut. This will allow you to unscrew the speed nut easily.
They are weigh about 5% less than regular nuts, making them ideal for applications where weight reduction is important, such as aerospace or lightweight machinery. The locking ring of the speed nut tightly engages with the metal surface, providing excellent resistance to axial pull-out and rotational forces. This makes them highly reliable in preventing loosening from vibrations or external forces.
Hex speed nuts are commonly used to pre-tension spindles or adjust axial gaps in machine tools. These nuts perform well in extreme conditions, including high temperatures, high pressure, and vibrations. They offer a more secure connection than double nuts, which are prone to loosening under stress. Due to their lightweight construction, hex-speed nuts are ideal for applications where every gram counts, such as in aircraft, automotive, or lightweight equipment manufacturing.
